Evergrove University RPG
✖ Frequently Asked Questions
Sometimes the Guidelines may not be as informative about this game as it should be. We realize that there will always be questions and concerns no matter how detailed. Thus the FAQ is born. You are free to comment and ask any other questions not listed here and a moderator will give you a prompt response.
✖ Is this a University or a College?
As quoted from WikiAnswers:
"The difference between a college and a university is that a college just offers a collection of degrees in one specific area, while a university is a collection of colleges. When you go to a university you are going to be graduating from one of their colleges, such as the business college. As to which is better, it depends on what you want. Single colleges tend to be smaller while universities are bigger, but universities are better known."
Therefore, consider this RP a University. HOWEVER, if you find yourself slipping up and saying "College", don't fret. It's nothing major because we all tend to see the terms meaning the same thing. I mean, I certainly didn't know there was a difference.
✖ Where is this game located?
Originally the Evergrove University existed in an unknown land. Not wanting to confuse the players (who had frequently questioned the placement in their journals) Linlin-mod finally decided to give it a name. Evergrove exists on a created continent and land on Earth, called Edel.
The city is called Aysel. Trendy restaurants, chic shops, think NYC except a little smaller. Go wild with the possibilities of what your character is doing when in the city.
The town this university is located at is called Lindell, a country-esque setting with plenty of wildlife and vegetation. Very modern little place with a few stores and so forth and plenty of forest landscape.
For more information, visit the Setting for a list of locations, buildings, and important places to your characters interest.
✖ What is the general basis of this game?
They're going to college. There is no big amazing storyline or scenario where all your characters are stuck on an island or pulled into some warped zone (however, your characters might face a few ghosts here or there that enjoy playing pranks on the students here at Evergrove.) They're students attending college and living in a modern setting, basic every-day life. However, there will be events from time to time University-oriented or something along those lines. The popular cliche events like balls and parties will occur along with original ideas like a Football game or Orchestra.
✖ How are days played out?
A normal day goes on like normal time. An entry made at 12pm will have occurred during 12pm that day for your character (unless otherwise stated). That means if during 12pm, your character was in class, that's where they were located during the entry. Logs are a little more different because they can take place at any time or any period.
✖ Is there a Spring Break? Summer Break?
To keep activity in the game somewhat steady throughout the year, Evergrove has a year round curriculum. To accomplish this, a custom term schedule was made. What this basically amounts to is each term being 16 weeks long. Seven weeks of instruction (with two days at the end for mid-terms), a week of break, another seven weeks of instruction, a week of finals, and then either one or two weeks of break (depending whether it is spring/summer or winter).
✖ How are students classified?
The number of cumulative credit hours students have earned will determine their classification.
Freshmen are between 1 to 23.5 completed hours.
Sophomores are between 24 to 59.5 completed hours.
Juniors are between 60 to 89.5 completed hours.
And Seniors are 90 or more completed hours.
Students are also classified by which term in their class year they are. Each class level generally takes two terms to complete and are shown by a Roman numeral after their year designation. A student that has just begun a semester at Evergrove University will have the roman numeral I. During the second semester it changes to II.
So for example if your student starts in the fall semester then they will be known as Freshman/Sophomore/Junior/Senior I.. and when the second semester starts in spring, they will be known as Freshman/Sophomore/Junior/Senior II.
✖ Does my character have to live in the dorms?
No, of course not! Possibilities are endless for students, they can either still be living at home, or rent an apartment with someone else. Just be sure to state somewhere in your application where they plan to live. If your character is residing in the dormitories but plans to move out, be sure to notify the RA of this so that he or she is removed and include it somewhere in your profile so that others are aware. The same thing for those who plan to move into the dormitories. Keep in mind that Professors/Teachers/Staff do not live in the dormitories. They will always own their own homes or what have you off-campus.
And a special note, if your character plans to live off in an apartment, please make a comment on the Dormitories list -- there will be a "living off campus" area specifically made for them.
✖ Are students capable of getting into trouble?
Well, of course! Grant it, not everything will be caught, but anything severe like a fight or perhaps stolen property reported will result in consequences. Suspensions and things of that nature, it depends on what The Dean (NPC) decides. A serious woman, so be careful. She dislikes troublemakers and will do whatever she can to see to it that her school is in tip-top shape. Sadly, she can't see everything.
✖ Do students get a lunch break?
This isn't high school. Students are in full control of their schedule and working out when they want to eat lunch is up to them. While there IS a cafeteria on campus grounds this doesn't mean they have to go here, but it's optional! Think of it like the high school cafeteria except it isn't reduced to a single meal option, but limitless possibilities.
You are more than welcome to schedule in time for your character to have a lunch break.
✖ Is there a Sorority or Fraternity House?
Yes! There is one Sorority (Χ ψ δ) and one Fraternity (Ω ξ γ) for students to try and join, each with their own houses and all the goodies in between. (More info on these to come soon).
✖ What time period is this game? How modern is it?
Everything exists here. Movies? Yeah. Cars? Yeah. Do they listen to Ludacris, Hikaru Utada, or maybe Muse? Yeah, that exists too. Your character is allowed to have their own transportation. Whether it’s the flashy sports car or the ugly about-to-break-down car, you can mention any form of transportation they may have. There is also public transportation available. Also to note, electronics like iPod's and Playstation's are all available. Keep it realistic and within this time period. If you're concerned, always ask and one of the mods will let you know.
✖ My character is a child in canon, can I keep it that way?
In the past Genius' Applications were not allowed. But IRL, there are students that go to college who are about 15 years old. (Linlin-mod knows a couple actually) So for now, as long as the character you want to bring in is at least 15 years or older, feel free to submit him or her.
Please take into consideration that if we start getting an overload of Genius' App's we will shut it down.
✖ My character was over a kabillion years old, can I do that?
No... lower it. Let's be reasonable, there are no kabillion year old people living today in the real world. Even if this is a fictional universe, you have to keep it as realistic as possible. So adjust that age to something that you think is fitting for that character. Go off their appearance if you need to.
If the person you're apping is in his/her thirties please note that they will be getting their Masters degree. Any older then they will probably be aiming for their PHD.
✖ I'm having trouble with a last name. What should I do?
Understandable! We all dread those characters who never was given a last name, and the idea of smacking a last name just kind of freaks us out. I know, it's so wrong when you think of Rikku with a last name, but it can be done! Just give it a shot and I promise nobody will laugh. Well, we might, but relax! We're all here adding silly or remarkable last names to our characters, so don't feel embarrassed if you think the last name isn't cool enough. If you really don't want to, you can simply avoid adding a last name all together and pretend they have one, but it's just not publicly known. Whatever makes you comfortable!
✖ My character has a bunch of super, awesome powers! Can I keep them? Please?
Erm, no.. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't want any Super Saiyans coming in and blowing up the school, kay? You can do without the powers, it won't hurt to make them average. I highly doubt there is a human that can blow buildings up with their sheer strength alone. If there is would you kindly point that out to me?
But if you must, and are apping someone like the Flash feel free to play up on making him extremely talented in track. As for someone like Superman, feel free to make him good at football or another sport. But ixnay on the super rays.
✖ My character has a weapon, can he keep it?
As we all know, characters often have signature weapons. They are allowed to bring them on campus, however they all have to be registered with the Dean's Secretary and placed on list. Also, they may not have any magical properties. Weapons may not be brought to class unless it is for instruction purposes, and in that case permission must be obtained from the instructor and the department head (aka cleared with the mods). All weapons must be kept in a safe and secure location and not used on fellow students. Remember, this is a college, let's try to restrain from the ninja sword fights of death?
✖ Can I become a Professor?
Yes. We are accepting Professors (we need them badly), so feel free to apply as one. We do prefer for the game to have more students characters than professor characters, but a university can't run with out its professors. Playing a Professor is a little different, so do keep that in mind.
✖ I want to share a history with another character, is this okay?
Certainly. If you intend to have a character say become siblings or related in some form, you are welcomed to do that. Additionally, if you have a character that may possibly share a history with another character here since they are from the same fandom, it would be wise to contact that person and discuss it first before immediately assuming to make them related or connected in some way. This takes time, I know. Creating characters from scratch to fit into an alternate universe means a ton of improvising and communicating, so take as much time as you need.
✖ There is a major I want my character to take, but it's not listed. Can I use that?
Of course! As mentioned, not all majors are listed because there are so many out there. So if you know of a major or minor you think your character is best suited for, use it! The Majors listing is only listed to give you a few ideas, but there is no limit to the possibilities on what they decide to take up in college. It's up to you to decide what you think will fit them best. The only stipulation is that the program you want your character to be in needs to actually exist and a link to said program needs to be supplied.
✖ I want to apply for a character that has a double in another game, can I?
Ah, that's a tricky question. We're aware of those characters in some Final Fantasy games that randomly make a cameo in Kingdom Hearts, or TYL and TYE characters from Katekyo Hitman Reborn! Two different character personalities, similar...everything. For characters like Riku and Riku Replica, it is completely okay to apply for either one. If it's a character like this that can easily be separated because of personalities and backgrounds, then the answer is yes. For a character like say Aerith and Cloud who come from two different games, that's probably going to be a no. It's only because by doing that it would mean having to change their names completely and there is just no fun in that. Always ask first because you never know. Really, the subject of doubles is very touchy and would require some kind of approval before you go about reserving. So the answer isn't a yes or a no, but "Ask First".
✖ Someone has played my character previously, what now?
Whenever a character is dropped and then picked back up by someone else, this is always a new person. If we go through several different Cloud's or Squall's, all of them are different each time. Nobody is familiar or recognizable, so please don't confuse them by having your character remember them.
✖ Can characters die?
Of course, but don't expect them to come back. This isn't a world where rebirth is possible. When a character dies, he/she's dead. Therefore, I would refrain from killing off your character. The worst you can do is get severely injured where you end up in the University Hospital for a few days and that's about it.
✖ Sex? Pregnancy?
Sex? Yeah, have a blast. Just remember to have consent, and always if you're logging give a warning. Pregnancy? Well, if you really want to get pregnant, go for it. Just make sure you okay it by the moderators first and receive consent from whoever it is you're getting knocked up by. No jumping out and saying you're pregnant out of the blue. Keep in mind that once you do have your child, you can't stay in the dormitories. You'll have to move out into your own apartment or house. After all, adults of all ages with children do attend college, but they don't stay on campus grounds with their kids.
✖ Can I speak/write in other languages?
Yes! An important thing to note for characters who originate from Japan or some other country that speaks a language other than English, you are allowed to have your character speak and write in Japanese fluently. THIS IS ONLY FOR CHARACTERS WHO ARE FROM OTHER COUNTRIES THAT EXIST. For example, if you want to make a post entirely in Japanese, simply say:
If your character is studying or has studied for the language or simply fluent in it as well, feel free to reply in the same language. Just be realistic, not everyone can fluently understand and write Japanese or whatever language the character is speaking. So if your character cannot understand German, don't suddenly make him or her understand what was written. Also, for a character like Rikku with a made-up language, she is the only person who can speak Al Bhed, grant it nobody will be able to understand it, but they can learn about it in their school library and etc. Just try to be realistic at how much they may know, nobody cannot instantaneously know Al Bhed the first time they speak to her. They would have to learn about it through the character first, and then and only then can the gradual process of learning begin. Unfortunately, made-up languages are not taught at the university, yet it can be learned so as long as they hear about it first.
✖ Voice/Video posting
Seeing as how most laptops these days are being made with a built in webcam as well as a microphone, I don't see the harm in allowing your characters make a voice/video post.
Just as long as you make sure to specifically state it somewhere in the Journal Title. (example: Johnny's greatest adventure - audio or Sandra's creme de la crop - video)
✖ How does chatting work?
Since this game takes place in modern times (as in, in this time period), this means that things like AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) will exist. Therefore, students and teachers alike have the option of being able to contact and talk to one another through messengers. You can either make up an AIM name or use your personal one. Feel free to mention any changes over at the Taken Characters list by commenting. It's not a requirement but another fun way of playing. After you finished your chat, you must post it over at egu_chats. All chat logs are considered part of the game. Be sure to rate it appropriately if there is any explicit language used.
✖ Do we have an OOC chatroom?
Yes, we do! OOC Chat is done over AIM. The room name is EvergroveUniversity. Inviting yourself is easy. All you do is add your aim name to your list, right click your name and invite yourself to the chatroom EvergroveUniversity, then invite. Presto! If you're still having trouble feel free to ask for help or simple ask for someone to send you an invite. Chat is open 24/7.
✖ So about these journal things?
The EGU Network is it's own private, contained intraweb and is accessible only by EGU users. From the network students can access their student e-mail, register and pay for classes, make entries in their journal, attend online classes, among other things. Users appear under their own name on the network and are not allowed to customize the name of their account. For instance, while the name of Euphemia's journal is discardedbyfate her account shows as "EGU: Euphemia li Britannia" insofar as within game is concerned.
The log on screen characters see will look like this:
And an example log on:
✖ Can my character see icons?
Yes, they can! Think of your journal as your personal Myspace/Facebook. Since this is an AU in a modern universe, things like uploading personal photographs is plausible. However, try to refrain from relying and constantly depending on it. Talking about one's appearance purely on icons can get a little over-redundant. You can see their icons, but there is no reason to constantly make comment on it or to even fully rely on it alone over meeting them in person.
